Now that all the parades, fireworks and enjoying the Big Boy train that traveled throughout the country to celebrate the 250 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence are over, I started to wonder how many wars we have endured since then in order to keep our nation a free country.
I am ashamed that my history lesson was at a loss for me, so I took the time to search for that information and would like to share it with you.
The wars included: The American Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, Indian wars, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Desert Shield/Storm War. On my Facebook page, I watched many stories narrated by an actor or actress, who were very well-spoken and talked about the horror of what these men and women have endured and fought for us in those wars.
When the story was ended, they would walk down to the frail veteran or a family member of a veteran who gave his or her life and shake their hand, press them close with a hug and thank them for their service. You could hear the crowd clapping with pride for these brave soldiers.
As I put my hand to my heart and look at the American flag listening to the singing of God Bless America, I have a sense of pride and am grateful to be an American, because of you, the veteran.
