I consider myself an independent thinker, and I believe people have every right to peacefully protest. That said, I find the idea of a sit-in over this issue confusing because I'm not sure it moves us closer to meaningful solutions.
I don't particularly like the ordinance myself. However, from what I've personally observed, our mayor and others involved have spent considerable time trying to connect people with resources rather than simply making arrests. Homelessness is a complex issue affecting communities across the country, and I don't believe there is one simple answer.
Instead of a sit-in, I wonder if our time and energy could be better spent attending the local Hope for the Homeless meeting, meeting privately with local officials and bringing thoughtful ideas to the table. Every member of our community has talents, experiences and skills that could help create lasting change if we're willing to work together.
Most importantly, let's not forget the people at the center of this conversation. Sit with someone who is unhoused. Share a meal, a cup of coffee, or simply a conversation. Human connection often teaches us more than debate ever can.
I truly believe both sides want solutions, even if they disagree on the best path forward. This isn't a Republican or Democrat problem. It isn't an "us versus them" problem. It's a community problem, and solving it will require compassion, collaboration, and a willingness to listen to one another.
