For some, Christian Nationalism simply means loving your country and using Christian beliefs to guide voting decisions. But there is a form of Christian Nationalism gaining traction in our country that is not really Christian at all. And this ideology is being stressed in some of our churches and in the political sphere.
Christian Nationalism is based on several fallacies:
1. Our founding fathers intended our nation to be a Christian nation.
In fact, our founding fathers believed in the separation of church and state and religious freedom for all. Under the constitution, all faiths are equal. Scripture's emphasis on free will dictates that we choose Jesus, not be forced to follow his teachings.
2. God has ordained America to be a Christian nation. In fact, Scripture clearly stresses inclusion for all vs. exclusion of some. Jesus ministered to everyone, regardless of faith or nationality. In God's eyes, no one is loved more than any other or given special preference.
The Kingdom of God is realized partly in this world but only fully when the world ends and Jesus comes again.
3. Christian Nationalism seeks worldly power. In fact, Jesus's ministry was characterized by humility, service and the surrender of power. Jesus witnessed and persuaded; he did not force.
4. Christian Nationalism is often aligned with white supremacy and racial subjugation, both antithetical to
Christianity.
5. Christian Nationalism relies heavily on Old Testament prophecies and law without integrating the New Testament emphasis on love.
