I was recently in Egypt to see the antiquities. I was shocked at the obvious police presence. There were military men in white, police in fatigues and uniforms and armed men in suits always present and accompanying us when we ventured off the bus or ship. Very unsettling.
Here you see the state trooper or the local cop infrequently and feel no threat. They are generally known, local people.
I am horrified to see that changing. Not yet here in rural, central Pennsylvania, but troops are being sent to cities and armed military and ICE and masked unknowns are roaming the streets with assault weapons on display.
On the news, I saw a woman thrown to the ground by a plainclothes man twice her size apparently because she was clinging to her husband who was being taken by masked ICE agents.
More recently, federal agents and officers literally attacked an apartment complex in Chicago at 1 a.m. It is reported by Time magazine that the agents kicked down doors, threw flash bang grenades, pulled people from their beds and zip tied them forcing the residents out of the building. Apparently warrantless searches and seizures.
We have heard about authoritarian takeovers where they came for some group that had been designated "negative other" and then another group and another, and suddenly they came for me and there was no one left to protect me. We cannot let that happen. I can't just wring my hands; I have to speak out loudly.
