Since the Covid epidemic, people seem to have forgotten that over a million Americans died. It was frightening. There was no cure. These were terrifying deaths.
While a vaccine was being developed, government at every level worked to keep us safe.. Masking, social distancing and stay at home orders prevented untold numbers of fatalities.
Most understood that, despite the hardships involved, saving lives was worth the sacrifice. Protecting our most vulnerable citizens from exposure was essential. While it was distressing to be kept apart, risking exposing loved ones was unthinkable.
Americans showed that they were caring and unselfish. Doctors, nurses and first responders were hailed as heroes.
Thankfully a highly successful vaccine program was rapidly developed. Almost everyone lined up to get the shots. For most, it allowed us to get back to our normal lives. Even the unvaccinated benefited from herd immunity.
In April of 2020, when lockdowns started, Biden was not in office. Trump was the president. These emergency procedures were instituted during his term. He was extremely proud of the speed with which the vaccine was developed.
Those who choose to rewrite history now blame Biden for the lockdown. Trump has turned his back, not only on the Covid vaccines but on other vaccines proven to be safe and lifesaving.
The methods that saved lives during Covid have been politicized and demonized. RFK Jr. is canceling mRNA vaccine development money. When the next pandemic hits, how will we pull together as a country to deal with it?
