Orchard Park should be saved
Orchard Park in Altoona is something special. The City of Altoona decided that creating green and grassy spaces through the various areas of the city made pleasant layouts for the neighborhoods.
Recognizing the success of such parks and playgrounds in similar cities, Altoona decided to design and lay out such parks in Altoona. Orchard Park was a beautiful choice.
A picnic table pavilion was built among some established trees in the park. Neighbors and children used this area to discuss matters and get to know each other. Many friendships were formed.
Altoona’s recreational Commission provided materials and playground equipment for children with which to play. These included sets of swings, see-saws, sliding boards and horseshoe pits. A basketball hoop was installed. Each summer a supervisor was hired to oversee the correct behavior of the day’s group.
The neighbors enjoyed watching and at times just sitting and relaxing on benches in Orchard Park. They often joined the ongoing fun with its festivals during Carnival Days that included dancing, food, games and fishpond surprise game bags.
This was the City of Altoona’s hope and vision. It was a gifted and beautiful togetherness in the City for all to use. Do not let this slip away.
There is only one Little Orchard Park. It remains where it has always been, in its serene beauty for all present and future generations to enjoy.
