Memorial Day will be here soon (Monday, May 26). I am extremely proud to be living in such a great nation. As a veteran, I will never forget the extreme sacrifices made by many so we may live in a free nation.
I remember back in the 1960s and 1970s when people seemed not to appreciate us in the military. I was very young then and could not understand this attitude.
Today, things seem to have taken a very positive outlook on veterans. Veterans are often thanked for their service, given discounts in many stores and restaurants. It makes one very proud to have served their country.
On Thursday, April 24, two friends and myself stopped at our local Red Robin for lunch. I was wearing my veterans hat.
There was a younger middle-aged person who was eating with a friend who approached our table. He thanked me for my service and I told him that the other two people at the table were also veterans.
He thanked us all for serving. As he was exiting our table, I noticed the back of his T-shirt had something describing the Fighting 28th Infantry. I assume he was also a veteran. When the waitress approached our table, she said that a person paid for our full check.
He left before we could thank him. I just cannot thank people like this enough.
I am very proud to be living in this country and may God bless this great nation we live in.
