The Republican Party has stepped on the vulnerable to enrich itself. President Richard Nixon's war on drugs fueled mass incarceration of Black Americans. President Ronald Reagan crushed unions, vilified LGBTQ+ people during the AIDS crisis and pushed the "Welfare Queen" myth to demonize the poor.
The GOP's greatest trick has been convincing its own voters to act against their interests. They promise tax cuts -- but only for the rich. They claim "school choice" -- but only wealthy families benefit. They call Medicaid and Social Security "waste" -- while stripping away health care and retirement security. Slap "socialism" on a program, and you oppose it, even when you rely on it.
If you think you're laughing with Trump and his allies because you've "owned the libs," think again. The only ones laughing are the wealthy politicians who've fooled you -- again.
