Thank you to the Altoona Mirror for covering the recent local demonstration in "Altoona joins in national protest." I was glad to see the story published, but I must admit some disappointment that this important act of civic engagement took second billing to a rainy first day of trout season.
While both stories speak to different aspects of our community, the former represents voices responding to significant changes that impact lives across Pennsylvania.
I attended the gathering and was heartened by the number of neighbors who showed up to express concern over policies affecting Social Security, education, the environment, and racial equity.
These are not partisan issues -- they are human ones. And they deserve thoughtful attention as we work together, across party lines, to ensure a better future for all Pennsylvanians.
I'm especially concerned about the long-term strain proposed federal cuts may place on our communities. Big things are happening, and many feel overwhelmed or unheard. As someone with a lifelong passion for the arts, I am particularly troubled by proposed reductions to the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. These institutions support creativity, education, and cultural heritage -- foundations of a vibrant society. The potential loss of grants, programming, and staff would be felt deeply, especially in smaller communities like ours.
I stand with those who are advocating for thoughtful policies that reflect shared values. I hope we continue to shine a light on the conversations and concerns shaping our country -- and our hometown.
