Natural gas lines throughout Altoona are being replaced. Anyone seeing what the old lines look like knows why they are being replaced.
Watching the men doing this work, you realize it's not an easy job. Yes, they have heavy equipment, but much of it is back-breaking hand digging.
The problem occurs after they leave an area.
My alley is anything but smooth after the lines are replaced. There are holes and rough spots throughout the alley.
There is a hole, actually it's becoming a crater, that belongs on the moon, behind the old Phoenix restaurant.
If you do not know the alley and drive it at night, you're in for a treat. It could be used as a ride in an amusement park.
But it's that way throughout the city. I talk to people who live in different parts of Altoona and they have the same problem.
I would like every member of the Altoona City Council to come to my alley between Third and Fourth Street and Fourth and Fifth Avenue, then drive their vehicles from one end of the alley to the other, at normal speed.
I would like them to count how many times their teeth clang together.
If members of city council feel this is a waste of their time or say it's not our problem or we cannot do anything about this problem, I say, what do we need a city council for? What do you tax-paying citizens of Altoona think?
