Letter underscores need for compromise

By James Riley 2 min read

In response to the March 17 letter by Kirk Dodson, I would like to set straight some incorrect information.

First, let me say that Dodson and John Joyce are two very respected friends, thus making this a difficult, but necessary response.

In the opening statement, Dodson asks "Why is Blair County so staunchly Republican, what have the Republicans ever brought to this area?"

I have the privilege of living and working in Blair County every day.

I deal with hard-working, honest people, people of integrity. I see many businesses thriving with owners and employees enjoying a quality life.

These people do not believe "pro life and the Second Amendment" should be considered "worn and tired mantras."

Perhaps an innocent life is less important to some people.

The example to back up Dodson's theory states, "In the past two weeks, 156 Republican members of the House of Representatives voted to raise the age for receiving Social Security benefits to 70 years old."

This is an absolute fabrication, based on a Facebook post by "Occupy Democrats" on Feb 26. Fact checking proved this untrue.

There was no such vote.

Had the Mirror done their due diligence, this would not have been sent to print. The Mirror's correction appeared as a small note on the second page, read by few in comparison.

On a personal note, I would like to state John Joyce still is, and not "was" a respected physician. His high moral standards, along with his professional background, have allowed him to offer medical help and advice to numerous people, including those who now condemn him.

I do not agree with 100% of Joyce's beliefs, nor do I disagree with 100% of Dodson's beliefs.

I do although, feel saddened and concerned by the hatred that has developed in this county, in large part, by the press.

It seems we hate each other, more than we love our country.

If we do not learn to compromise, we will fail.
