Students must think before tragedy strikes

Sometimes an editorial needs to take a broader, if not unconventional, look at situations in the news. The Feb. 12 Mirror article about six Penn State Altoona students under investigation regarding an Oct. 27 early morning vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old high school student is one such circumstance. Re-entry group faces hard work

The one indisputable reality encompassing the work of the Blair County Prison Re-entry Coalition is that its efforts will continue to necessitate utmost patience and understanding. Absent one or both of those two assets, the coalition will be doomed to failure and, ultimately, extinction. Review board instrumental in blight fight

Altoona should not ignore any potential resource in the fight against blight. That’s why the city should revive the Vacant Property Review Board, which has been dormant since about 2008. Evidence in the form of blight — now and perhaps as far back as 2008 — has shown how inactivity of the review board can affect this municipality’s work to reduce the number of problem properties. NS should look to future safety issues

The $22 million settlement resolving all of East Palestine, Ohio’s, claims against Norfolk Southern Railroad represents a significant step toward finally putting the disastrous February 2023 derailment there to rest. McCrory’s project should be praised

People look down on those who brag for the purpose of touting their self-perceived greatness or, worse, for ridiculing or belittling others. But, what can be referred to as “controlled bragging” should not be construed as bad in all cases. It can have a positive, useful purpose, if its intent is built genuinely around helping others. Downtown Altoona’s former McCrory’s 5 & 10 building at 1306 11th Ave. is a great example of the latter.
