John S. ‘Goose’ Marin

John S. 'Goose' Marin, 76, of Altoona, passed away Saturday afternoon at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by his family. John was born in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Stephen and Helen (Miller) Marin. He married Mary E. Cover on Oct. 13, 1979, in Altoona.

Survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Amanda M. (Ty) Marin; a son, Stephen D. ‘Steamer’ (MacKenzie); grand­children: Colson, Peyton, Aubrey, Adalyn and Avery; along with other extended family and friends.

John was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

John was the First Vice Commander of the Catholic War Vets and Vice President of the Catholic War Vets Home Association. He was a trustee of the Blair County War Veterans Council. He was on the PA Governor’s Council for the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. John was a member of the Catholic War Vets Club, American Legion and past member of St. Stan's. He played basketball at Penn State Altoona and was inducted into the Penn State Altoona Basketball Hall of Fame.

Goose was an electrician for IBEW and then for the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He was also a basketball coach and referee.

He served in the U.S. Army as a SP4 during the Vietnam War.

Friends may be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at Stanley J. Krish Funeral Home Inc., 1204 17th St., Altoona.

A Celebration of Life will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, at Catholic War Veterans Club, 290 Valley Ave., Altoona, starting with a memorial service by Father Frank Scornaienchi. Military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army and Blair County Honor Guard.

Private committal will be at Blair Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home Christmas Charity, 138 Veterans Blvd., Duncansville, PA 16635.
