Hazel Margaret Raquepau, 75, passed away after a brief illness at Conemaugh Nason Medical Center, Roaring Spring. She was born in Saginaw, Mich., the daughter of Harrison Joseph Raquepau and Frances Mae Carling. She grew up in Pennsylvania and attended Altoona Area High School.
After divorcing her first husband, Hazel earned a degree in education while at times working two or three jobs and raising four children on her own. Her hard work and perseverance paid off, and she went on to work as an elementary school teacher for several years and then later using that degree as a program coordinator at the YWCA. Eventually she went on to more lucrative factory work alongside her husband, Thomas Fries, whom she married in October 1999. Thomas preceded her in death in 2020.
Outside of work and family, Hazel enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved spending time at a cottage fishing with her husband, reading mystery novels and taking walks with her beloved dogs.
She is survived by her four sons: Paul Jr., Brian, Eric and Travis; a stepdaughter, Casi Fries; and her sisters, Alexis Raquepau and JoAnne Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas J. Fries Jr.; and her brothers, Carson "Jimmy" Rothrock and Russell Ellenberger.
Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.
