Sister Mary Andrew Hooper, SSCJ

Sister Mary Andrew Hooper, 61, a perpetually professed Sister of the Congregation of Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, entered into eternal life on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, after 37 years of religious life.

Sister Mary Andrew was born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 7, 1964, to John Patrick and Marie (Donahue) Hooper and was given the name Mary Aileen.

Sister Mary Andrew was a graduate of Carrick High School in Pittsburgh. She went on to achieve a degree in Applied Science in Leadership Technology from Cambria County Community College.

Sister Mary Andrew entered the Congregation of Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Sept. 25, 1988. She made her first profession on June 29, 1991, and her perpetual profession on June 29, 1996, in Cresson. She celebrated the silver jubilee of her religious life on June 4, 2016, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Cresson.

Since Oct. 15, 2007, she belonged to the local house community of St. Maximilian Kolbe at the province house of her Sisters in Cresson.

Sister Mary Andrew served in the field of personal care in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, where she worked at Bishop Pelczar Manor in Johnstown and later at John Paul II Manor in Cresson, where she was the first administrator and provincial economy, as well as working with province development on the golf committee. Sister held these offices until she suffered a stroke on Sept. 12, 2020.

Since Oct. 13, 2020, Sister Mary Andrew resided at Garvey Manor. The Sacred Heart Sisters and the family of Sr. Mary Andrew are most grateful to the Carmelites of the Aged and Infirm and their caring staff at Garvey Manor for the exceptional care they provided over the last six years.

In addition to her deceased religious Sisters and parents, Sister was preceded in death by her twin sister, Kathleen Pujol.

Sister is survived by her stepmother, Carole Hooper; and siblings, James (Janene) Hooper, Trish (Julian Neiser) Hooper and JoAnne (Bryan) Concannon; brother-in-law, Raymond Pujol; and beloved nieces and nephews.

A viewing for Sister Mary Andrew will be held in the lobby of John Paul II Manor, 856 Cambria St., Cresson, on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Vigil prayers for the deceased will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday by Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak, Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown.

On Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, 2026, funeral services will begin from the John Paul II Manor lobby at 10 a.m., followed by transferral of Sister's body to the Church of St. Francis Xavier, 211 Powell Ave., Cresson. Rosary for the deceased will be prayed at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., with celebrant and homilist Rev. Fr. Leo F. Arnone, Sr. Mary Andrew's pastor and friend.

Burial will follow at the Sisters of the Sacred Heart section of Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery, Route 53 North, Cresson Township.
