Lt. Col. Ronald Dale Hoover, 82, formerly of Altoona, passed away July 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Almena, Kan., Ron was the youngest of five children and was raised on a family farm, where he developed the strong work ethic, perseverance and generous spirit that guided his life.
Ron served with distinction for 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military career took him around the world, including assignments in Japan and Germany, and included meaningful service during the Vietnam War.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked in the private sector and later devoted himself to volunteer service with the Altoona District Mission Team - Volunteers in Mission, helping families rebuild after natural disasters.
Ron was known for his quiet strength, resourcefulness, kindness and constant willingness to help others. Family was the center of his life, and he found great joy in supporting his children and grandchildren and spending time with those he loved. His devotion to his wife, Barbara, remained steadfast throughout their life together and during her time in memory care.
Ron is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Hoover; his children: Amy Dubois, Frank Hoover and Andi Shinderman, and their families; his stepdaughter, Kathy Ziegler, and her family; his sister, Ila Mae Marble; his brother, Dean Hoover; and many extended family members and dear friends.
There will be a celebration of life service for Ronald Hoover at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at Greenwood United Methodist Church, 1505 E. Walton Ave., Altoona.
Arrangements are by James Funeral Home, Huntersville, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites others to honor Ron's memory by performing an act of kindness for someone in need; or by donating to the Altoona VIM Team, 2511 Juniata Gap Road, Altoona, PA 16601.
