Carl F. ‘Moonie’ Maier

Carl F. "Moonie" Maier, 98, Altoona, passed away Sunday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center.

On Aug. 31, 1957, Moonie married Joan C. Karcz. She preceded him in death on July 16, 2025.

He is survived by his three sons: Carl F. Maier Jr. (Karan) in Texas, John J. Maier in Florida and Christopher A. Maier of Altoona; two daughters, Corinne A. Baker (John) of Altoona and Joanie M. Hoover (Terry) of Shermans Dale; 12 grandchildren: Joseph, Kevin, Jeremy, Carla, Jeff, Tiffany, Sarah, Michael, Christine, Adam, Alexa and Alaina; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Bauer (Edward) in Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

Moonie was preceded in death by his siblings: Mary Bernhart, Anna Letscher, Louis Maier, Willie Maier, Hans Maier, Danny Maier and Irene Engleman.

He was a graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Conrail as an assistant general foreman. He was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Unter Uns Musical Society, the Swiss Club and the Buccinese Club.

Moonie enjoyed gardening, cooking and bowling. He was proud of bowling two 300 games. He liked playing horseshoes and was a legend at bocce. During his time in the Army, he played baseball in Korea, Japan and Hawaii. Continuing his love of baseball, he played for the minor leagues and in Canada. He later enjoyed umpiring softball.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the VA Hospice team and nursing staff for their care.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1405 Fifth Ave., Altoona. Committal with military honors will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Altoona.

The family kindly requests that contributions be made in Moonie's memory to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1405 Fifth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
