Walter Frank Vongehr

Walter Frank Vongehr passed from this earth on Saturday at the age of 81. He was born in Altoona, the only child of Walter F. and A. Ruth (Horton) Vongehr.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Linda L. Flynn Vongehr; and a very special friend, Dorene C. Holland Sturm.

He is survived by sons, Steven F. of State College and Scott S. (Gretchen Lindner) Vongehr of Bozeman, Mont. In addition, he is also survived by grandsons, Elliott W. and Owen P. of Bozeman, Mont.

Frank graduated in 1966 from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He began work at Penn State in July 1966 as an accounting trainee and was promoted to Budget Accountant and to Financial Office for the Vice President for Research in October 1969. He retired from that position and the University in July 2001. Also in 2001, he was presented with the Charles R. Chambers Excellence in Accounting Award.

In his early years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. During the 1970s, Frank developed an interest in bowling. After retirement, he bowled three times a week in senior leagues, holding offices in several of them.

In 1966, Frank joined the Altoona Maennerchor, a German men's chorus, just eight months short of being a Charter Member. During the 1970s, he was appointed Assistant Director and in 1987 was chosen as Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2018. After retirement, he volunteered with the chorus in concession stands with the Altoona Curve.

Frank was a lifetime member of both the Altoona High School and Penn State Alumni Associations. He was a lifelong fan of Penn State sports and held season tickets for Penn State wrestling and men's and women's basketball. Frank was a member of the Quarterback Club, the Nittany Lions Club and the Penn State Nittany Lions Wrestling Club.

Friends and family will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Mount Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Road, State College, with Pastor Mike Swimley officiating. Burial at Blair Memorial Park, Altoona, will take place at the convenience of the family.
