Ronald Ray ‘Squirrel’ Gensamer

Ronald Ray "Squirrel" Gensamer, 84, of Tyrone, died Saturday at Maybrook Hills Rehab and Healthcare Center, Altoona. He was born in Altoona, one of seven children of the late Jerry W. and Mary (VanScoyoc) Gensamer. In March 1972, he married Donna L. Neff.

Ronald is survived by his wife; two children, Ronda (Greg) Kernan and Greg Gensamer; and two grandchildren, Brooke and Bryson Hescox.

He was the last of his immediate family and was preceded in death by siblings: Jerry, Wilbur, Paul, Robert, Betty Grager and Shirley Cannastraci.

Ronald was a 1960 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Based out of Quantico, he served at Paris Island, Iceland, Camp Lejeune and in the Vietnam War, earning his honorable discharge after six years of service.

He was employed at Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central Railroad, Conrail and Norfolk Southern, retiring after 38 years of service. He served his community, dedicating 24 years as Antis Township supervisor and also a board member of the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.

Ronald was a member of the Jaffa Shrine, involved in the Jaffa Jeepsters and Ushers. He enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting.

His greatest joy was watching the accomplishments of his grandchildren, whom he loved deeply.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.

The family suggests that contributions in Ronald's memory be made to Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
