Michael J. Malligan, 79, Altoona, passed away unexpectedly on Monday at his residence with his wife by his side.
On June 30, 1979, he married the former Mary McCreery in Altoona. Together, they shared 47 years of marriage, and Mike often said Mary was not only his wife, but his best friend. He loved her, his children and his grandchildren more than anything in the world.
He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Malligan; his three sons: Todd (Gina), Michael (Megan) and David; his sister, Donelly Steinbeiser (Fred); and his grandchildren: Addison, Molly, Ryan, Michael, Lincoln and Maura.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. Malligan and Ethel (Cheers) Malligan.
He was born and raised in Altoona and was a 1964 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School. He worked at Penn State University for 35 years.
Mike was a devoted fan of Penn State and Pittsburgh sports and never missed a chance to follow local teams. But his greatest mark on the community came through coaching, a passion he picked up as early as age 19 and carried through all his children's playing years. Over the decades, he coached parochial league basketball at McNelis and St. Mary's, Federation baseball and more than 15 years of Little League baseball, touching the lives of countless young athletes along the way.
Husband, father, grandfather and coach -- Mike was beloved by many people and will be remembered for the love and dedication he poured into everyone around him.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2026, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave., Altoona, Father James Dugan, celebrant.
