Chester C. "Chip" Pike III, 70, passed away Wednesday at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Altoona, where he spent his entire life rooted in the community that shaped him. Chip built a life defined by familiarity, family and quiet resilience.
Chip graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1973. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War until 1979. His military service came to an early end when he was honorably discharged due to a lung disorder that left him disabled -- a challenge he faced with strength and perseverance.
Despite his health limitations, after returning home to Altoona, Chip built a career as a truck driver, a job that suited his steady nature and strong work ethic. He later retired from Yellow Trucking due to his disability, closing a chapter marked by commitment and resilience.
Chip was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret "Sis" Calderwood-Pike; his parents; grandparents: Maurice and Marie Smith and Chester and Pearl Pike; a younger brother, Thomas Pike; brother-in-law, Alan Grove; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy (Basile) Earhart, whose companionship and devotion brought him great comfort and joy; a sister, Elaine Grove of Philipsburg; and a nephew, Christopher Grove of Philipsburg.
Chip's family, friends and all who knew him will remember his loyalty, quiet humor and the steady presence he brought into their lives.
His story reflects decades of meaningful relationships, simple routines and the grounding presence of home.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2026, at Anthony P. Scaglione Funeral Home, 1908 Seventh Ave., Altoona.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the funeral home.
