William J. ‘Bill’ Bravin

William J. “Bill” Bravin, 83, of Altoona, died early Sunday afternoon at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edward and Marie A. (Luther) Bravin.
He married Alberta A. “Bert” Traini on Oct. 19, 1968, in New Kensington.
Surviving are his wife, Bert; two daughters, Kathleen D. Bravin and Julie M. Bravin, both of Altoona; a granddaughter, Angeline Bravin of Altoona; a brother, Daniel E. Bravin of Duncansville; a sister, Mary Shumaker of Altoona; and numerous extended family members.
Mr. Bravin was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Altoona.
He was a 1960 graduate of Altoona High School; a 1964 graduate of Saint Vincent College with a BA in history; and a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a master’s degree in education.
Bill retired as a special education teacher from the Hollidaysburg Area School District in 1999 following more than 30 years’ service. He also was a cross-country, track and swimming coach for many years. He was fortunate to teach for a time at Colegio San Carlos, Bogata, Columbia.
He enjoyed running, socializing and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bill served as a PIAA official for track and cross-country for many years.
Bill was a member of Altoona Council #551, Knights of Columbus.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil service for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2026, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 2010 12th Ave., Altoona, with the Rev. Mariusz Gorazd, celebrant. Committal rites will follow at the church.
Interment will be made at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
