Maurice “John” Baker, 78, of Roaring Spring, passed away Wednesday at his residence. He was born in Roaring Spring, a son of the late John Dale and Florence E. (Knisely) Baker.
On June 13, 1970, at Foot of Ten Bible Church, he married his wife of nearly 56 years, Cynthia (Stitt) Baker.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Bradley Baker (Nichole) of Tyrone, Brandon Baker (Rachel) of Rockford, Ohio, and Janell Yingling (Barry) of Curryville; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Detwiler of Altoona and Willa Saylor of Newburg.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Dale Baker.
John was a 1966 graduate of Northern Bedford High School and attended DeVry Technical Institute.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969-73 as an Air Traffic Control Specialist, receiving his honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant while stationed at Lockbourne AFB.
When he returned home, he was employed at E.F. Smith Trucking, HRB Singer and lastly with Conrail at the Juniata Locomotive Shop. John retired after 31 years as a railroad electrician and crane operator.
He was an extraordinary turkey hunter who recorded more than 100 harvests throughout his life. John also enjoyed hunting whitetail deer, fishing with his grandchildren, puzzles and playing board games with the family.
For many years, the U.S. flag flown on the mountain in the Loysburg Gap was maintained by John.
He and his wife, Cindy, enjoyed more than 37 years of membership at the Faith Baptist Church, Altoona.
Friends will be received from 1 until the 3 p.m. service Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Fink & Stone Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Woodbury, with Dr. Gary G. Dull officiating. Private interment will be at Dry Hill Cemetery.
