Alice Jane ‘Janie’ White

Alice Jane “Janie” White, 88, of Altoona, died late Friday afternoon at her residence in the company of her loving family after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born in Huntingdon, a daughter of the late George S. and Edna P. (McCracken) Porter.

She married M. Gordon White Jr. on June 16, 1962, in Huntingdon. He preceded her in death Jan. 26, 2019, following 56 years of marriage.

Surviving are two children, Deborah J. Utesch (Matthew) of Bethlehem and Michael G. White (Laurie) of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Sydney Utesch and Tyson Utesch; three sisters: Ruth Jackson (Jim) of Huntingdon, Barbara Troychock (John) of Bloomsburg and Helen Porter of Harrisburg; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family; and special friend, Ronald Stacey of Hollidaysburg.

Mrs. White was a 1956 graduate of Huntingdon High School and a 1960 graduate of Lock Haven State College with a BS degree in elementary education.

She was employed as an elementary school teacher at the former Adams Elementary School in the Altoona Area School District before dedicating herself to her family.

Janie was recognized by her Greenwood neighbors as an avid walker. She enjoyed a good cup of tea, reading, nibbling on sweets, singing, going to movies and supporting local community theater productions. She enjoyed cheering for the University of Pittsburgh sports teams and attending church functions. Janie especially loved supporting the athletic events in which her husband, children and grandchildren participated.

Janie was an active member of Second Avenue Global Methodist Church, Altoona, where she served in various roles through the years, including the choir. She was also a member of the Silver Sneakers and the former Greenwood Dandy Lions.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona; and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Second Avenue Global Methodist Church, 130 Second Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
