Stephen Frederick Stahl, 78, of Altoona, passed away March 3, 2026, at UPMC Palliative Care, after a long struggling bout with cancer. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Frederick and Mary Ellen (Weyandt) Stahl.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Robert Alan Stahl.
Stephen is survived by cousins: Jeffrey (Diane) Stahl of Altoona, Kevin Stahl of State College and Sheryl Gleaton of Charleston, S.C.
He will also be sadly missed by his old friend and caregiver, Deb Picano.
He enjoyed spending time with old friends, John Fiore for Friday lunches and Howard Shapiro of New York when he came back for hometown visits.
Stephen was a 1966 graduate of Altoona Area High School and a 1989 graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He studied in Munich, Germany, for his dissertation and received his advance degree in religious studies.
He retired from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he was the Business Manager for “The Jurist,” which was the only academic journal published in the United States devoted to the study and promotion of the Church’s sacred discipline, Canon Law.
Stephen was a lover of cats, especially his baby, Abigail. Over the years, he had many, both inside and outside visitors, feeding them, housing them and loving them.
At the request of the deceased, no public funeral services will be held.
Stephen willed his body to Science Care for research on his numerous ailments.
Memorial contributions may be made in Stephen’s memory to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.
A prayer service will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altoona, at a later date.
