Paul Porinchak
May 23, 1939 – May 7, 2026
Paul Porinchak, beloved retired owner and butcher of Porinchak’s Market, the oldest family-owned store in Portage, passed away peacefully Thursday at home at the age of 86 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Johnstown, Paul grew up learning the values of hard work, honesty and community. Those principles guided him throughout his life, especially in his many decades behind the butcher counter at Porinchak’s Market, where he carried on the family tradition began by his grandparents in 1900. Known throughout Portage and beyond for his friendly smile and old-fashioned courtesy, Paul took great pride in providing only the highest quality meats and personal service to every customer. His handcrafted kolbassi became a local favorite, earning him generations of loyal patrons who became friends. His store was well known for city chicken, hams, holiday kolbassi and freshly ground poppy seed. He even shipped special orders all over the country. Paul believed that a small-town store was more than a business — it was a gathering place built on trust and respect.
In his younger years, Paul participated in the Portage bowling league. He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in Altoona for six years. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Portage American Legion Post 430, Portage Moose Lodge and Benscreek Social and Citizens Club.
Paul loved travel and found joy in exploring new places and meeting new people. He loved attending local church picnics and seeing live Oldies bands.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Kathy (Kinley), of 46 years; son, Jack Wargo and wife, Kelly, of Millville, Del.; daughter, Robyn (Wargo) Underhill and Brian Feleciano of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren: Abby and Alec Wargo, Kaelyn and Bryson Campbell and Sophie Underhill; step grandchildren, Alyssa and Olivia Underhill; sister-in-law, Lynne (Kinley) Doyle; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary (Oravecz) Porinchak; in-laws, Ralph and Janet (Jones) Kinley; sister and brother-in-law, Robin (Kinley) and Jim Johnson.
Paul was a devoted husband and loving father, building a beautiful life with his family. He was always so proud of his children and grandchildren.
Paul will be remembered for his generous spirit, his devotion to family and his unwavering commitment to the store and town he served so faithfully — one cut, one smile and one customer at a time. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Conemaugh Regional Hospice for the excellent care and support provided over the last 6 months. We are especially appreciative of Brenda and Ashley for their abundant compassion and patience. The entire team brought comfort during a very difficult time.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2026, at Jean H. Kinley Funeral Home, Portage.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Portage, with Father Thomas Stabile, celebrant. Interment at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Portage. Military Rites by the Portage Ritual Team will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Portage Volunteer Fire Company in Paul’s memory.
