John Arthur ‘Jack’ Shaner
April 1, 1934 – May 19, 2026
John Arthur “Jack” Shaner, 92, of Altoona, passed away Tuesday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center. He was born in Altoona, son of the late John S. Shaner and Mary Ila (Barnett) Shaner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul S. Shaner; sons, James C. Shaner and Ronald M. “Ronnie” Shaner and his wife, Elsa M. Reep Shaner, who passed away on Dec. 31, 2006.
Jack was first united in marriage to Catherine L. Yonkosky in July 1953. He later married Elsa M. Reep.
He was a 1952 graduate of Altoona High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-59, obtaining the rank of E-4 Specialist as an Ordnance Parts Specialist and Stock Control Supervisor for the 7th Infantry Division at Camp Taiser, Korea.
Jack retired in 1989 as manager of the Station Mall State Store. He was a Pennsylvania sports advocate and enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, working puzzles and playing chess.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Cesare Battisti Club.
Surviving are his children: Sharon D. Banks (Noland) and husband, Richard, Terry L. Shaner, Daniel A. Shaner and David B. Shaner; grandchildren: Terry L. Shaner Jr., Kevin Shaner, Daniel A. Shaner Jr., Shawn M. Noland, Travis L. Noland, Kristopher R. Banks and Andrew R. Banks; great-grandchildren: Claire E. Banks, Leah G. Banks and Nicholas F. Banks; a nephew, Michael W. Shaner; and niece, Heather T. Shaner Gaucher.
Jack will be remembered by his family and friends for his love of family, dedication to his community and the many friendships he made throughout his life.
Friends and family will be received from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona, officiated by Chaplain Ben Chon.
Burial will be held at Alto-Reste Park with full military honors.
