James D. “JC” Carothers, of Altoona, passed away Thursday at UPMC Altoona, at the age of 70. He was born in North Versailles, son of the late Charles and Margaret (Hill) Carothers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stacey McGeary, who passed away on Oct. 3, 2016.
Surviving are his three loving children: EmmaRose Carothers (Thomas Molteni), Sierra Lamb (Andrew) and Zachary Eberwein; his grandson, Rylan; his brother, John Carothers (Kim); and his sister, Suzan Estner (Josh). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Maria (Sortino) McGeary.
JC was a 1972 graduate of East Allegheny High School and continued his education at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. He retired as a manager from Kings Family Restaurant and was currently working for the Altoona Area School District as a special education aide, having previously driven a school bus for the district.
He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a previous member of his home church, Linway Presbyterian in North Versailles. He was also a social member of the Catholic War Vets.
JC had a passion for cooking and cherished spending time with his family, including his dog, Bella Rose. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing the piano and loved the neighborhood where he lived. He also had a fondness for taking scenic road trips and visiting the beach.
Family and friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the funeral home, with Pastor Luke Miller officiating. Private interment will be at Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.
