Herbert E. “Herb” Detrich, 78, of Altoona, peacefully passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on Friday, embraced by his faith and love for his Lord and Savior. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Herb and Agnus (Boyles) Detrich.

On Oct. 21, 1967, he married Deborah L. “Debbie” Baker.

In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by two sons, Mark (Tracy) in North Carolina and Mathew of Altoona; two granddaughters, Ariel and Victoria (Daniel) Thorndike; and a great-granddaughter, Sloane Thorndike, all in North Carolina; a sister, Polly Holup (Ronald) of Pittsburgh; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Bonnie Kaup and Diania Young; and a brother-in-law, Jason Baker.

Herb was a 1965 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1967 graduate of Penn State University, majoring in electronics.

He began his career at HRB Singer in State College and after working for JCP as an electronics technician, he opened Keystone Service Center, after which he worked at PSU until retirement.

He was a member of Grace Alive Church.

Herb enjoyed electronics, listening to Diesel Creek and Ship Happens, antique cars and Bible study. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Herb retired from the United States Navy Reserve.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona.

Family and friends will also be received from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery.
