Phyllis (Wright) Barnes, 96, of Altoona, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. She was born in Newry, daughter of the Late Eugene and Edith (Leonard) Thompson.

After sharing 49 years of marriage with Jesse Wright, he preceded her in death in 1996. In 2001, she married Thomas Barnes, who preceded her in death in 2015.

Surviving are her six children: Patricia Drexler (Edward), Barbara Babiak (Michael), Connie Wright, Thomas Wright (Cheryl), Steven Wright and Theresa Moore (Maxwell); and two stepdaughters, Susan Barnes and Joy Flanigan (Roger). She was blessed with eight grandchildren: Karen, Diane, Ben, Marcus, Miranda, Megan, Maxwell and Kaitlyn; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her sister, Rita Rightnour; and a special sister-in-law, Charlene Thompson.

She was preceded in death by siblings: Audrey Hofer, Roger, Francis, James, Joseph, Eugene, Raymond, Paul and Donald; and three stepsons: Richard, Thomas and Eric Barnes.

Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and in 1951 graduated from Mercy School of Nursing. She retired from Mercy Hospital in 1994.

She was active in Catholic Nurses and Our Lady of Lourdes Christian Mothers. She was a devoted supporter of the Mishler Theater and many other charities.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave., Altoona, with Father James Dugan, celebrant. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are by Rose Hill Funeral & Cremation Care Inc., 118 Rosehill Cemetery Drive, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Christian Mothers; or Tunnel for Towers.
