On the wings of angels, Mary Catherine Burke, 85, Portage, passed into eternal life on April 16, 2026, at Maple Heights, Ebensburg. She was born at home in Coupon, the daughter of Leo and Naomi (Luther) Waksmonski.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward A. Burke; and her nephew, Scott D. Brady.
Mary is survived by her siblings: Theresa (Bill) Brady of Ebensburg, Donna McMarlin of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Leo (Theresa) Waksmonski of Cranberry Township. Mary was Aunt Re Re to her many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, godchildren, and some who were not related.
She was a very giving person and always had sweets to offer at her home and to all the loving staff who cared for her at Maple Heights.
Mary graduated from Greater Gallitzin Jointure High School in 1960, and retired as a Unit Clerk from the former Laurel Crest Manor after 20 years of service. It was there she met her husband, Ed. The two were united in marriage on Oct. 4, 1980, and had 40 happy years together.
Mary had a special love of children and the elderly. She and Eddie took excellent care of her mother and mother-in-law. She was fond of angels and was a very special angel to all who knew her.
Mary was a member of Local 1305 Union and Cambria County Retirees Association, a former member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Portage, and a current member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Ebensburg.
The family wishes to thank the third floor nursing staff at Maple Heights for all the loving care she received.
Family will receive friends from 9 until the 10 a.m. memorial Mass on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at
Holy Name Catholic Church, Ebensburg, with Father Brian Warcola and Father Larry Lacovic, celebrants. Inurnment in St. Bartholomew Cemetery, Wilmore.
Arrangements are by Matthew R. Decort Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., Portage.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name to Holy Name School Angel Fund, 215 W. Horner St., Ebensburg, PA 15931.
