Daniel E. Hayes

Oct. 30, 1949 – April 10, 2026

Daniel E. Hayes, 76, of Swarthmore, peacefully passed away Friday at the Veterans Affairs Community Living Center in Philadelphia after an extended illness. He was surrounded by the love of his family at the end.

Born and raised in Altoona, the son of R. George and Esther (Snavely) Hayes, Dan carried with him a deep appreciation for family, hard work and life’s simple joys.

He shared an extraordinary 52-year marriage with his beloved wife, Diane (Gardner) Hayes. Their enduring love was the foundation of a close-knit family that Dan cherished above all else. He was the proud father of two daughters, Dr. Darcy Hayes (David Sacker) and Dr. Dayna Hayes (Scott Cathcart). His pride only grew with the addition of his grandchildren: Catharine Coats, Jacob Sacker and Nathan Sacker, whose lives and accomplishments brought him immense joy. Dan found great happiness in watching and celebrating each of their endeavors, always offering encouragement and support.

Dan was one of six siblings. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Botteicher and Marjorie Hoffman; and his brother, Don Hayes. He is survived by his brother, David Hayes (Nancy); and his sister, Linda Hayes (Chuck Stallworth).

A 1967 graduate of Altoona High School, Dan went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1970-72. Following his service, he dedicated 30 years to supporting his family as a corrections officer at SCI Huntingdon, retiring in 2011 with the rank of lieutenant.

Before the cognitive and motor challenges of his later years, Dan lived life with energy and enthusiasm. He was an avid bowler and a member of the Blair Bicycle Club. He was also an occasional marathon runner who enjoyed time on the golf course. He was known in sports and in life to never do anything halfway.

Above all, Dan will be remembered for his quiet strength, his deep love for his family and the immense pride he took in those closest to him. His presence brought comfort, his support inspired confidence and his love will remain a guiding force for all who knew him. He will be missed beyond measure.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a future date.
