Daniel G. Carlheim, 83, of Altoona, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at Graystone Manor-Bellmeade. He was the son of the late Leo and Bernadette (Davis) Carlheim.
On Dec. 26, 1964, he married the love of his life, Rosemarie Bryan, at Simpson United Methodist Church in Altoona. They shared 59 loving years of marriage until her passing on Sept. 10, 2024.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Glass (Michael) and Jennifer Lonsinger (Lonnie); and a son, Daniel G. Carlheim Jr. (Mary); seven grandchildren: Lonnie Jr., Danielle, Zachary, Taylor, Morgan, Carson and Dannika; and 11 great-grandchildren: Maddison, Brayden, Jaxson, Brynlee, Chase, Claire, Kennedy, Savannah, Quinnley, Payton and Bruin. He is also survived by his three sisters: Barb Brantner (Kedric), Linda Eckels (Dave) and Cindy Umholtz (Wally); as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Yerty; and his brothers, Eugene Carlheim and Raymond Carlheim.
A proud veteran, Daniel was a 1961 graduate of Altoona High School before honorably serving in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Airman First Class. He dedicated many years of service to the maintenance department at Penn State Altoona, retiring from there. Earlier in his career, he worked for Conrail and K-Mart Foods.
Daniel was a man of Methodist faith and a member of the Bavarian Aid Society.
An avid sports enthusiast, he was a dedicated fan of Penn State, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pirates and the Yankees. He had a great passion for bowling and could often be found enjoying time at Holiday Bowl, Bavarian and Pleasant Valley Bowl. He also found great joy in vacationing to Hilton Head Island. Above all, Daniel cherished the time spent with his family, especially with his children, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family extends a special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff of Graystone Manor at Bellmeade, where Daniel resided for 11 months and was affectionately known by his nicknames: “Sugar Britches,” “Twinkle Toes” and “Gunsmoke Man.”
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2026, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.
A funeral service celebrating Daniel’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the funeral home, with Pastor Noel Myers officiating. Interment will follow at Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.
