Robert A. Burchfield, 89, Altoona, passed away peacefully Monday morning at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Theodore D. and Audrey G. (Wissinger) Burchfield.
He is survived by four sons: Robert Jr., Kevin (Susan), Stephen S. and Mark (Tommi); two daughters, Deborah Ergler (Ed) and Karen George (Ron); two brothers, Ronald and Thomas; and two sisters, Judy Athey and Marilyn Adams.
Bob was preceded in death by a son, Douglas; brothers: Theodore Jr., David and Joseph; and his former spouse, Dolores “Dee” Burchfield.
Bob’s impact on family was felt by those he left behind, including his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews.
He was a 1954 graduate of Altoona High School and obtained an associate degree in business administration.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served from January 1955 to January 1958, where he was a member of the 301st Army Security Agency Battalion, whose training in Fort Devens, Mass., was a precursor to National Security Agency (NSA) training. With that sub-specific training, Robert served overseas in Korea as a “Direction Finding” Operator and Instructor from October 1955 to March 1957.
He retired from Penelec after nearly 30 years of service, where he proudly served as President and Vice-President of UWUA Local #180 for many years.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, the American Legion and the VFW.
Bob was an avid reader, WWII history buff and especially loved attending his grandchildren’s events and functions.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, with Monsignor Stanley Carson, celebrant.
Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in memory of Robert be made to the Duncansville VFW, 1665 Newry Lane, Duncansville, PA 16635; or the Korean War Veterans Association, 3 Black Skimmer Court, Beaufort, SC 29907.
