Melvin R. Pfahler, 72, of Altoona, died Saturday afternoon at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, a son of Iva M. (Adams) Pfahler and the late Melvin S. Pfahler.
He married Verajean R. Wigand on Jan. 13, 2009, at Pinecroft United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife; his mother; six children; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers; five sisters; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Vince; and numerous extended family members.
Melvin was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin; a brother, Terry; a niece, Beth; and his first wife, Judith (Esworthy) Pfahler.
Mr. Pfahler was a member of Riggles Gap Bible Church.
He was a 1973 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School.
Melvin retired as an auto mechanic from Forshey's Garage after 40 years' service. He was then employed as a driver at Blair Senior Services for 10 years.
He was a life member of the Pinecroft Fire Company, where he served as Fire Chief and President for more than 30 years.
Melvin enjoyed playing golf, traveling and calling Bingo at the fire company, but he most especially enjoyed spending time with Vera.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the funeral home to help defray expenses would be appreciated.
