John P. ‘Cubby’ Barefoot

John P. “Cubby” Barefoot, 80, of Altoona, went home to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late Blaine A. and Nellie F. (Smith) Barefoot.
He married Kathleen C. “Kathy” Hand on March 9, 1990, in Tyrone. She preceded him in death in 2011.
Surviving are seven children: son, Blaine A. Barefoot (Gina) of Altoona; daughter, Heather; son, William L. Brooks (Lisa) of Houtzdale; son, Christopher E. Brooks (Karrey) of Warriors Mark; daughter, Lisa Bickmore (Jeff) of Johnstown; daughter, Lori Stevens of Altoona; and son, Nick Santa Maria (Tammy) of Amstead, W.Va.; eight grandchildren: Bethany Brooks, Leah Brooks, Alyssa Brooks, Erika Andruscavage (Brent), Troy Higginbotham (Christy), Brittany Talbott (Corey), Pastor Dan Wilt and John Barefoot (Amanda); five great-grandchildren: Sophia, Landon, Lilly, Hadley and Grayson; a brother, Jordan Barefoot of Altoona; and a sister, Susan Rhodes of Altoona.
Cubby was preceded in death by a grandson, Nick Higginbotham; a sister, Norma Hunt; and a brother, Rodger Barefoot.
Mr. Barefoot was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Tyrone.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving as an Electricians Mate Fireman Apprentice during the Vietnam Conflict era.
Cubby retired as an IBEW Local #5 electrician with more than 30 years’ service.
He was an avid fan of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and also enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a volunteer electrician for numerous projects and families and he enjoyed woodworking. Cubby most especially loved spending time with his family and church family.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona; and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, at Grace Baptist Church, 2308 Adams Ave., Tyrone, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Dan Woodring officiating. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in memory of Cubby please be made to Grace Baptist Church, 2308 Adams Ave., Tyrone, PA 16686; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
