Frank S. Friedenberger Sr., 95, of Altoona, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 1, 2026, at Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Medical Center, Pittsburgh. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late Casper and Theresa (Gramheller) Friedenberger.
He married Jean E. Bookhamer on Aug. 8, 1956, in Richmond, Va. She preceded him in death on Dec. 30, 2016.
Surviving are five sons: Steven G. Friedenberger (Lorie M.), Frank S. Friedenberger Jr. (Pauline L.), Michael K. Friedenberger (Sandra D.), Joseph A. Friedenberger (Valerie K.) and Mark E. Friedenberger Sr., all of Altoona; a daughter, Juanita Friedenberger of Everett; a sister, Louise Swonger of Altoona; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family members.
Frank was preceded in death by a son, Scott.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served a tour in Japan before reenlisting to serve in the Korean Conflict, seeing combat in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He attained the rank of Corporal and was an escaped Prisoner of War. Frank received two purple hearts and many more medals during his time served.
Frank retired as a self-employed contractor following many years' service.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. with Chaplain Ben Chon officiating. Military Funeral Honors will immediately follow at the funeral home.
Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
