Alwine

Nancy R. Alwine, 94, Hollidaysburg, known lovingly to many as “Ganny,” passed away Saturday at UPMC Altoona after complications from a brief illness.

She was born in Reading, daughter of Paul and Ruth (Longacre) Keller.

Nancy was a 1949 graduate of West York High School. On Dec. 27, 1952, she married Carl “Buck” Alwine.

Surviving are her son, Bruce Alwine (wife, Roberta) of Pittsboro, N.C.; her grandchildren: Erica Peterson (husband, Tim) of Martinsburg, Stacey Said (husband, Chris) of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Russ Alwine of Roanoke, Va., four great-grandchildren: Riley and Hailey Peterson and Harrison and Lily Said; as well as the extended Bechtel family: Mark, Andrea, Adam and Zach and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Buck” Alwine; her daughter, Kay Bechtel; and her brother, Donald Keller.

Nancy retired from the Hollidaysburg Area School District after 25 years of dedicated service in the high school cafeteria and continued as a sub for several years after her retirement. During her children’s school years, she served as treasurer of the HAHS Band Parents. She was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg. She served her congregation faithfully over the years, including time on the church council and as treasurer.

Nancy enjoyed books and reading, watching and analyzing her beloved Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. She was also a proud Penn State football fan and former season ticket holder with her husband. She especially cherished watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports and spent countless hours at swim meets, basketball, baseball and softball games. She was also an avid league bowler for many years at Holiday Bowl, Altoona. She enjoyed knitting, traveling with her husband and friends and floating in the pool.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the noon funeral service Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, Pastor David Bowman officiating.

Arrangements are by Plank, Stitt and Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg.
