James Joseph "JJ" Johnston Sr., 65, of Woodbridge, Va., lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025. JJ passed peacefully in his sleep with his wife, Sandy, by his side.
JJ was preceded in death by his father, David Nelson Johnston; and mother, Utoka Susanna (Helsel) Johnston.
He is survived by his sister, Kim Regina Johnston; his wife of 44 years, Sandra (Stephens) Johnston; his sons, James J. Jr. (Katie) and Stephen M. (Amanda); and three precious grandsons that he absolutely adored: James III, Hayden and Chase.
JJ was a 1978 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School. During his school years, he participated in baseball and football. He was also a volunteer with the Duncansville Fire Department and attended Dry Run Gospel Church, Duncansville.
Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps. As a marine veteran, he retired from Prince William County Parks and Recreation after 40 years of employment.
JJ enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to spend time on the water -- fishing or hunting -- and vacations at the Outer Banks, N.C. He shared his love of the water with his sons. JJ, a former athlete, was able to carry on his love of sports as he watched his sons participate in basketball, wrestling, baseball and football. He spent many years at the baseball field coaching and cheering them on.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2025, at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge, VA 22192; and from 10 a.m. until the noon service on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 p.m.
