Kerr

Douglas Leroy Kerr Jr., 78, of Altoona, passed away Oct. 15, 2025, at his residence after a brave battle with Parkinson's. He was born in Hornell, N.Y., the son of the late Douglas Leroy Sr. and Esther (Hedden) Kerr.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelly Ivory, of Altoona; and his son, Andrew Kerr (Deborah) in North Carolina; grandchildren: Bryant Ketrow, Kirsten Kerr, Jayden Ivory and Ansley Kerr; and two great-grandchildren, Bryson and Ryatt.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Thomas Kerr; sister, Nancy Hammond; brother, Roger Kerr; and great-grandson, Xayvion Johnson.

Douglas was a high school graduate and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.

He retired from Norfolk Southern, where he had been a machinist.

A simple man, Douglas was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. If he wasn't in the woods, you could find him shoveling snow for the whole neighborhood or watching his grandkids play ball. He also loved spending time with his family and cooking for the holidays. He always supported fundraisers and never said no to anyone needing help.

Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 6 p.m.

The family kindly requests contributions be made in Douglas's memory to Blair County Game Fish and Forestry Association, 301 Riggles Gap Sportsmen Road, Altoona, PA 16601; or plant a tree in his honor.

It's requested that you wear your favorite outdoor or hunting clothes to the service.
