Susan N. Luebkert, of Heathsville, Va., peacefully passed away Tuesday in Richmond, Va., with family by her side. Known as "Susan," "Sue," "Grammie" or "Mimi," she was 81 years old. She was born in Altoona, a daughter of the late Martin Francis and Helene "Nellie" (Roebuck) Novack.
Along with her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her brother, James M. "Jim" Novack; and her sister, Delores "Dolly" Stiver.
Susan is survived by Malcolm, her husband of 58 years; son, Mack (Trina) and their children: Parker, Callie and Sophie; daughter, Beth Wise (Jeff) and their children, Jake and Sarah; son, Michael (Tiffany) and their children: Olivia, Brady, Matthew and Camryn. She is also survived by her siblings, Marilyn "Molly" Fair of Saginaw, Minn., and Martin "Marty" Novack of Altoona; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Susan's life was defined by a strong, principled moral compass. She was a dedicated patriot throughout her lifetime and was honored to be employed by the National Security Agency (NSA) in her earlier days.
Susan had a very strong sense of pride in her Polish heritage. She spent many hours researching her family's genealogy and was eventually able to trace her family's roots back to a small town in Poland.
Throughout her life, Susan was committed to her family and friends. She was a proud stay-at-home mother and would often tell others that she was a "domestic engineer." Later in her life, Susan became very active at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, especially with The Women of Saint Francis, previously serving as the chair for the bereavement group. Susan enjoyed being a member of the Cook Squad with the Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad. She greatly enjoyed making stained glass pieces, keeping up with current politics, beekeeping, attending her grandchildren's activities and collecting nutcrackers.
Susan traveled to nine different countries during her lifetime. She sailed the Great Lakes and lived in five states. Once, with her husband and children on a family vacation, Susan left Connecticut for California, driving the Southern route and then taking the Northern route back to Connecticut.
Susan was also a wonderful conversationalist and had a great sense of humor, never passing on a chance to laugh. Her laugh and smile will be greatly missed.
Visitation will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, at Currie Funeral Home, 116 E. Church St., Kilmarnock, Va.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 154 E. Church St., Kilmarnock. Interment will be at the church cemetery after Mass and a reception will immediately follow the internment at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Susan's honor to The Women of Saint Francis; or to the Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad.
