Sister Joseph Angelina Marie, O.Carm., a Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, died peacefully on Friday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg.

Ofelia Morta Castano was born in the Philippines, daughter of Gregorio and Angelina Morta. She had six siblings, and is survived by her sister, Josephina, in the Philippines; and brother, Arthur, of San Francisco, Calif.; as well as nieces and nephews in the Philippines and California.

Sister was educated as a Doctor of Optometry and later, as a lab technician after she immigrated to the United States. She proudly became a citizen in 1984. She worked in a Manhattan hospital until she entered the Carmelite Sisters in 1987. She professed perpetual vows in 1995. In ministry, she served in Carmelite homes for the elderly in Hyattsville, Md., Bayside and Utica, New York, and at Garvey Manor since 2014. Her gracious personality suited her ministry in clerical positions and in pastoral and activity program roles with the residents of the homes.

Throughout her life, Sister had a prayerful demeanor, being particularly devoted to the Eucharist, the Blessed Mother and to the intercession of Angels.

Friends will be received 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at St. Joseph Chapel, Garvey Manor,

followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with Monsignor Robert Saly officiating. Burial will be at Queen of Carmel Cemetery at the Carmelite Sisters’ Motherhouse, Germantown, N.Y.

Honoring Sister Angelina’s love for her religious Congregation and the ministry to the elderly, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to the Carmelite Sisters’ ministry at Garvey Manor, 1037 S. Logan Blvd., Hollidaysburg.
