Michael A. "Mike" Turek, 88, of Bellwood, died unexpectedly Oct. 19, 2025, at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. He was born in Bellwood, son of the late John and Anna (Najduch) Turek.
He married his beloved wife, Barbara A. (Stauffer) Turek, on Sept. 19, 1959, in Altoona. She preceded him in death Feb. 25, 2011. In 2016, he met Carol Forney, his loving partner, who survives, along with their faithful dog, Abby.
Mike is also survived by four children: David A. and wife, Shawnee, of Curwensville; Michele A. Pielmeier and husband, Timothy, of Bellwood; Cheryl L. Lontz and husband, Dale A., of New Cumberland; and Michael A. Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Buckhannon, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren: Benjamin Turek (Valerie), Jessica Peacock (Roger), Heather Turek (Julian), Freddie Dorman (Pamela), Danny Pielmeier (Lexie), Beth Lontz, Tracy Andrews (Reed), Kylee Strawcutter (Carter), Christopher Lontz (Madi) and Emily Pielmeier (Alex); nine great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Dorman and husband, Fred.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald; and his siblings, John Jr. and Genevieve.
Mike was a 1955 graduate of Altoona High School and proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the Angels of the 11th Airborne.
He retired from PPG, Tipton plant, and was also co-owner, along with his wife, of Altoona Medox.
Mike was an active member of his community, specifically of the Lions Club. At the time of his death, Mike was acting President of the Altoona Lions Club and acting secretary/treasurer of the Lions Sight Foundation of Blair County. He was a past District Governor and a tireless volunteer and fundraiser.
Mike's true legacy will be one of love, generosity and service to others. He was a selfless and devoted family man, a friend to all and an altruistic community member.
He enjoyed spending time with and doting on his family and friends. He was a railroad enthusiast, a world traveler, a master storyteller and a lovingly devious trickster.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona. A Lions memorial service will be held at 8 p.m.
Friends will also be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 408 N. Sixth St., Altoona, with the Rev. Eli Hess officiating. Interment will be made at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Lions Sight Conservation Foundation, 1639 Timberline Drive, Altoona, PA 16601.
