John C. "Johnny" Rutter, 76, of Altoona, went home to meet his Lord and Savior on Monday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center after a five-year battle with cancer. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late Charles and Cleo Rutter.
He was united in marriage to the former Darice (Weidley) Rutter on May 23, 1970, in The First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donald Treese.
Along with his wife of 55 years, he is survived by children, Wendy Rutter Sprankle and significant other, John Brumbaugh; and John Rutter Jr. and significant other, Angie Claar; grandchildren: Jessica Moser (Jeremiah), Kearsten Whitfield (Bryce), Allison Sprankle, Zach Rutter, Savannah Rutter and Ricky Davis; great-grandchildren: Alayna Moser, Oaklynn Moser and Jeremy Moser; siblings: Charles Rutter (Jane), Darrel Rutter, Ken Rutter (Loretta) and Janis Rutter Smith (Greg); nephews: Chris Smith, Keith Rutter, Brock Rutter, Adam Rutter and Tyler Rutter; and nieces, Autumn Weakland and Tara Rutter.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by infant brother, James "Jimmy" Rutter; and in-laws, John Sr. and Marjorie Weidley.
John was a graduate of Altoona Area High School, Class of 1968.
After high school, he went on to serve in the United States Marines.
After the Marines, he was employed at PRR-Conrail in 1970.
John found joy early on in life through football, proudly playing in both Junior and Senior High School and later for one memorable season with the Whitetail Bucks. He was never happier than when he was outdoors: swimming, exploring the back roads and taking in the beauty of nature. Family beach trips were a favorite.
His love for Christmas was unmatched, especially when he decorated the gazebo at Graystone for two magical years. He was always willing to give the shirt off of his back and could always be found with an ice cold Mountain Dew.
John loved the Lord deeply and always enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Friends and family will be received from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at noon Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona, with Pastor Gary Dull officiating.
