David R. Swanger Jr. passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Known for his unwavering work ethic and remarkable ingenuity, Dave was an equipment operator before he retired in 2019, but he had a gift for building just about anything. Whether it was restoring old tractors to their former glory, crafting something by hand, or tending to his abundant garden, he poured his heart into everything he did. His musical ear was just as remarkable -- he could hear a song once and effortlessly play it by ear on his guitar.
An avid outdoorsman, Dave found joy in hunting and fishing, and he took great pride in his garden, where he regularly grew corn, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins and strawberries. His hands were rarely still, always busy with a project or helping someone in need. His generosity and willingness to lend a hand knew no bounds, he was the first to show up and the last to leave when someone needed help.
Dave is survived by his devoted wife, Jeannie (Dodson); his beloved mother, Louise of Altoona; and his sister, Lana of Altoona; his children, Kristy Rizzo (Ryan) of Greensburg and David Swanger III (Emma) of Hollidaysburg; and his greatest joys -- his grandchildren: Carter and Grady Rizzo and Everly and Madilynn Swanger.
Dave's legacy of hard work, craftsmanship, and selfless service will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, and from 10 to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
