Merle J. Grimes, 90, Dysart, passed away peacefully Friday at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Dysart, son of the late John and Orvetta (Plunkett) Grimes.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, the former Ruth Ann (Dumbeck); his children: Wendy (Shawn) Martyak, Daniel J. (Janet) Grimes and Jeffery A. (Sue) Grimes; six grandchildren: Nicole (Jason), Shawna (Wes), Neil, John (Jamie), Ashley and Isabelle; great-grandsons, Cameron and Luc'; and his loyal dog, Barney.
He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Geraldine; his sisters: Coletta Landon, Regina Gibbons, Winifred Dworak, Bernice Grimes and Betty Hale; and his brother, Telford J. Grimes.
He was a U.S. Army and Army Reserves veteran and served as a cook and executive chef from 1957-59. Merle retired in 1996 as a mason, having been employed by Hughes & Crawford and L.S. Fiore Inc.
He relished time with his wife and family and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Friends will be received from 1 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, at Gibbons-Houser Funeral Home Inc., 301 Church St., Gallitzin, the Rev. Father Justin Treon officiating. Interment will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Merle's memory may be made to the UPMC Family Hospice of Central Pennsylvania.
