Robert E. "Bob" Wedge, 78, of Altoona, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday surrounded by his loving wife of 44 years and his two children.
Born in Port Huron, Mich., he was the son of the late Edward W. and Margaret E. (Beckton) Wedge.
Surviving are his wife, Debra; son, Matthew (Kourtney), and grandchildren, River and Bee, of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Kelly (Stephen) Deao of Denver, Colo.; brother, Edward W. (Shellie) Wedge of Harlan, Ind.; sister-in-law, Linda of Georgetown, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard W. Wedge.
Bob was a graduate of Port Huron High School in 1965 and went on to the University of Michigan, where he earned his bachelor's degree in architecture.
Bob grew up with an early love of sports that would define much of his life. He excelled in basketball, football and track at Port Huron High School and went on to compete at the University of Michigan. He was a three-year letter-winner as a defensive back on the Wolverines football team during the 1966-68 seasons and a standout on the track team, winning the Big Ten Indoor Triple Jump Championship in spring 1969. After completing his NCAA eligibility, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, but ultimately decided to pursue other professional passions and returned to Michigan to finish his five-year degree in architecture. In recognition of his athletic achievements, Bob was inducted into the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1970, Bob moved to Altoona, where he joined Hayes Large Architects. He became a partner in the firm in 1984 and devoted his career to shaping the community through health care and higher education projects. Among his many contributions, the Altoona Hospital Tower and Outpatient Center stands as one of the many enduring landmarks of his work.
Beyond his career, Bob lived a full life. He loved skiing, golfing, fishing and cheering for his Wolverines on fall Saturdays. Later in life, photography became a passion -- capturing countless moments of his children, their friends, sporting events, his beloved dogs and finding beauty within many of the small moments and simple things in life.
Known for his sharp wit and warm humor, Bob brought laughter and light to every room he entered. Above all, Bob treasured his family and friends.
Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025, in the Stevens Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the George Ferris Neurohope Center, in gratitude for the compassionate care Bob received. Contributions may be mailed to 5930 Sixth Ave., Suite 1, Altoona, PA 16602.
Bob's life was marked by integrity, love and a competitive spirit that never faded. His legacy lives on in his family, his work and the many people whose lives he touched. Go Blue!
