Lenny J. "Len" McConnell Sr., 70, Cresson, passed away Wednesday at UPMC Presbyterian. He was a son of the late Ferdinand and Hilda (Hershel) McConnell.
He was also preceded in death by his only son, Lenny McConnell Jr.; his siblings who he considered his best friends: Gert Trybus, Pat, Ron, Jake and Paul; brothers-in-law, Bobby Jr. and John Slattery; sisters-in-law, Marie (Bernie) Market and Carol McConnell; and nephews, Dave McConnell and Michael Trybus.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Annie (Slattery); daughter, Mandi (Mike) Huff; brother, Bob McConnell of Pittsburgh; bonus grandchildren: Brayden, Colton and Baya Huff; father-in-law, Bob Slattery; brothers-in-law, Jim and Patrick Slattery; sisters-in-law, Linda and Anne; his Aunt Lenora, who held a very special place in his heart; and a brother-in-law, Walter Trybus. Len is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces, whom he was very proud of and had some of the best times of his life with; as well as his best friends at "the shop" (you know who you are); and lastly, his life-long friends he developed while trucking.
Len took pride in being a successful owner/operator, working in the trucking industry for over 50 years. He will forever be remembered as the friend that would pull over to help someone in need, even if it set him back.
He loved boating and entertaining many friends and family at Raystown Lake. Those brave enough to ski behind him will always remember the pure look of joy he displayed at the helm. He also developed a particular passion for fishing, specifically for striped bass and learning the tricks of the trade from his brother and best friends. His family will cherish the memories of camping at the lake.
Len was a jack of all trades and had an open-door policy for anyone in need. His best friends should plan to carry on this legacy and recall the "rules of the shop."
His son was a heart transplant recipient at a very young age, and after having experienced this process, as a final act of generosity, his wishes to be an organ donor have been fulfilled, giving multiple others a chance to enhance and enrich their lives.
No services will be held at Len's request, but if desired, donations can be made in his name to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; as well as The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE).
Arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 233 Keystone Ave., Cresson.
