Thomas Watkins "Tom" Sheriff, 69, formerly of Roaring Spring, passed away June 12, 2025. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, son of the late Dr. Joseph H. Sheriff and Eileen (Miles) Sheriff. The family moved to Roaring Spring shortly thereafter.
Tom enjoyed Little League baseball and was an all star for the Roaring Spring team as an outstanding second baseman. Along with baseball, Tom enjoyed participating in many sports: wrestling, golf, tennis, pickup basketball, backyard football and many hours skiing at Blue Knob.
Along with this love of sports, he excelled in academics, and he found a scholastic competitor during his time at Central High School in Joanne Wenger. The two of them graduated from Central in 1973 and decided to put their academic competition aside by becoming husband and wife.
Eventually, the couple moved to the Houston, Texas, area and settled in the town of Katy, where a few years later, they welcomed their daughter, Erin. In Katy, Tom continued his fandom for all things Penn State and the Steelers, along with adopting the Houston Astros as his favorite baseball team. In retirement, he was an active member of the Cinco Ranch Golf Club in Katy.
He worked for 30 years as a control room operator at a gas-fired electricity generating plant in the Houston area. His work career was cut short by rheumatoid arthritis. Complications led to his passing in the early morning of June 12, 2025.
Tom leaves behind his wife, Joanne; daughter, Erin (Sheriff) Reeves; and two grandchildren, Audrey and Noah. He has also left his two brothers, Joseph and David, both of Port Angeles, Wash.; their wives, Lynnette and Robin; and their grieving extended families.
They, along with his many friends from the Cove and Houston, will miss Tom's loving nature, sharp humor and willingness to argue any point, especially those in the sports and political arenas.
No service will be held.
