W. Dean Esper Jr., 69, of Altoona, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, May 18, 2025. He was born in Altoona, a son of the late W. Dean Sr. and M. Naomi (Harclerode) Esper.
Mr. Esper attended Dry Run Independent Baptist Church.
Dean was a teacher, coach and guidance counselor for 30 years in the Altoona Area School District.
He enjoyed going to Penn State football and basketball games, Altoona Curve games, and numerous local high school and college games. Most importantly, Dean enjoyed reading his Bible and going to church, where he taught Sunday school for 23 years.
He graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1973, where he was a varsity basketball player for three years. Dean graduated from Geneva College in 1977, where he played both college basketball and baseball. He received a master's degree from Penn State in 1984 and a counseling certificate in 1990.
Dean was a former board member of the Altoona Rescue Mission and currently served on the board of The Way of Truth Ministries.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing or funeral service.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a Celebration of Life will begin at 7 p.m.
